SmoothTrack Help

Setup on Your PC (Wifi)

(Follow these instructions if you want to connect via Wifi)
  1. Download and Install OpenTrack:

Head over to the OpenTrack releases page and grab the latest version. It's free and open-source.

  2. Configure OpenTrack Input and Output:
    • Input Source: Set to "UDP over network".
    • Output: Choose "Freetrack 2.0 Enhanced" with sub-type "Both".
  3. Adjust Your Firewall Settings (if necessary):

To ensure SmoothTrack can communicate with OpenTrack, you may need to allow incoming UDP traffic on port 4242 through your firewall in case you have one. See Troubleshooting for detailed instructions on how to do that.

  4. Start OpenTrack: Click the "Start" button in OpenTrack to begin listening for SmoothTrack's data. Do not worry about seeing "No Video" - SmoothTrack doesn't send video, it sends data.
  5. Find Your PC's IP Address:
    1. Open Command Prompt.
    2. Type ipconfig and press Enter.
    3. Note the "IPv4 Address".

Setup on Your PC (USB)

(Follow these instructions if you want to connect via USB)
    • Enable adb-debugging on your device, instructions here
    • Download the open source gnirehtet server (1 MB) and extract it.
    • Download Android platform tools (8 MB), and extract the following files to the gnirehtet folder:
      adb.exe
      AdbWinApi.dll
      AdbWinUsbApi.dll
    • Plug in your Android device via USB - Double-click on "gnirehtet-run.cmd" in your gnirehtet folder
    • Your device will ask you whether you want to connect to the VPN connection Gnirehtet is creating for you
    • Say OK.
    • Press Windows key -> "Command Prompt" -> type "ipconfig" -> find your IPv4 address
    • Now start up OpenTrack, set UDP as input (check its port), start up SmoothTrack, enter your IPv4 address + port and hit Start!

Setup in SmoothTrack

  1. Enter Your PC's IP Address: In SmoothTrack's settings ⚙️, input the IP address of your PC.
  2. Press Play: Tap the Play button in SmoothTrack. The octopus in OpenTrack should now start moving. You can now enter any sim game that supports head tracking and it should work already - if not, you'll need to check the game's settings for enabling "head tracking" or "TrackIR" or the like.

Troubleshooting

Set Up Windows Firewall

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type firewall.cpl and press Enter to open Windows Defender Firewall.
  3. In the left sidebar, click on Advanced settings. This opens the Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security window.
  4. In the left pane, select Inbound Rules.
  5. In the right pane, click on New Rule... to open the New Inbound Rule Wizard.
  6. Select Port as the rule type and click Next.
  7. Choose UDP and enter 4242 in the "Specific local ports" field. Click Next.
  8. Select Allow the connection and click Next.
  9. Check the network profiles where you want the rule to apply (Domain, Private, Public). It's usually safe to select all three. Click Next.
  10. Give the rule a name, like "OpenTrack UDP Port 4242", and click Finish.
  11. Important: Be aware of any existing firewall rules that might block incoming UDP traffic or port 4242 specifically. If you have rules that block "Any" incoming connections or ports, they could override this new rule. You may need to adjust or prioritize your rules to ensure OpenTrack functions correctly.

Set Up Port Forwarding

  1. Your router may also be blocking network traffic between devices. See PortForward.com for simple instructions of how to set up port forwarding on your router.

Check whether a VPN may be blocking traffic

  1. If your phone has an active VPN, this may block traffic between your phone and your PC. Either disable your VPN to use SmoothTrack or make sure you can reach your PC through the VPN.

If nothing seems to be working...

  1. Double check that you've pressed Play both in OpenTrack and in SmoothTrack.
  2. Try rebooting your PC and your phone.
  3. Join the SmoothTrack Discord and ask for support there (or send me an email).
